Master Control Operator

Duties

  • Controls and monitors the content going out over the air, such as news, programming and commercials.
  • Supplies the show director with exact start and end times for commercial breaks.
  • Monitors live programs, which have many moving parts.
  • Records programs from satellite feeds.
  • Stays on top of breaking news.
  • Ensures the station adheres to local, state and federal regulations.

Qualifications

  • Knowledgeable about broadcast equipment and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Able to instinctively change direction when circumstances dictate.

Experience Level

  • High school diploma or GED certificate is required, although many stations prefer someone with a bachelor's degree in communications, journalism or related field, or an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree.
  • Certified Television Operator (CTO) or Certified Radio Operator (CRO) training is also desirable.
